Belmont, North Carolina

Belmont, NC

Belmont, North Carolina, has a city slogan that describes it perfectly: "Where southern charm blossoms." It's a town painted by a rich and varied history, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, and located the perfect distance from Charlotte. The big city is still accessible but also distanced enough so that Belmont has a completely distinct feel.

The natural beauty that makes the city so charming also played a role in the history of the town's development. Belmont was first settled during the colonial era, then expanded upon by Dutch settlers in the 1750s, who called the area Garibaldi Station. Those who did settle down there could not easily move from place to place since the town was shut in at the end of a peninsula, surrounded by bodies of water that were difficult to cross. As a result, the Industrial Revolution hit the area late.

In 1833, community members changed the name to Belmont, which translates to "Beautiful Mountain," an ode to nearby Crowders Mountain. That mountain has two main peaks that lend hikers incredible views, is a hotspot for birdwatching, and features a trail that crosses into South Carolina. Today, the National Park is known for its difficult trails, with breathtaking cliffs, and is a favorite among backpackers.

Belmont changed after the name change. In the 1850s, textile manufacturing brought an economic boom, and a railroad built in the 1870s allowed the textile industry to grow even more rapidly, transforming the town. That continued until the 21st century when the textile industry gave way to new investors who capitalized on the cityscape and opportunity for waterfront properties.

Another way to celebrate the beautiful outdoors here is to stop by the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. The garden spans 30 acres and features different displays, like tropical plants, orchids, perennials, and more, with walking trails and beautiful water fountains interspersed. On top of regular visitation, the garden hosts events like jazz festivals, birdwatching walks, and wreath-making tutorials.

Belmont offers a wide variety of unique culinary experiences if you're looking for a bite to eat. One, Nellies Southern Kitchen, was established by the Jonas Brothers' family. The restaurant serves up Southern fare made from locally-sourced ingredients and features a rooftop bar.

Belmont has a lot of restaurants offering southern dishes, but one, The Bottle Tree, serves up southern food with global influences; or maybe it's global food with a southern flair. The dinner menu includes bison Osso Bucco ramen, flounder piccata, and char sui pork loin served alongside cabbage rolls. The team also creates seasonal cocktails to pair with the meals and has a wine list described as world-class.

You can even do good for others while you satisfy your cravings. Holy Angels' nonprofit has a cotton candy factory where the proceeds are dedicated to caring for those with developmental disabilities. That same organization also runs an art gallery called Bliss which lets differently-abled people showcase their art besides other guest artists' creations.
