Although much of North Carolina's focus goes to places like Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham, some smaller communities do just as much to make the state special. One of the standouts in that genre is Bessemer City, a suburb of just under 5,500 people in Gaston County. https://worldpopulationreview.com/us-cities/bessemer-city-nc-population
Bessemer City started as a mining town. While the Dutch settled other communities nearby, Bessemer City came to be with a land grant from England's King George II in 1754. The man who won that grant established the Ormand Mining Company, titled after his surname, and built the oldest mining stack of its kind in the United States: the Old Ormand Furnace. Some historians believe soldiers used it to make cannon balls during the revolutionary war against, ironically, King George II's son. It's now used as a picnic ground and reunion site for the Ormand family.
For a while after that, Bessemer City was mostly agricultural, but mining was still a big deal in the area. It's also home to the largest producer of lithium in North and South America, used for things like batteries, ceramics, and pharmaceuticals. Bessemer City today is still known for its small-town charm, and Centennial Park is a perfect place to witness it. It isn't just a place to go for a nice walk; it's home to major events and serves as an entertainment center. That's where you can go for the Sounds of Summer Concert Series and other festivals. Local artists also show off their work there.
Art lovers can also enjoy the Bessemer Bees mural along E. Virginia Avenue. And if you consider cooking a form of art, there are plenty of good places to eat. Dino's Italian Pizzeria is famous for its award-winning Italian food and desserts. Another great place to visit is Surf and Turf Lodge, which was voted the best steak and seafood restaurant in the area. If you're a fan of southern food, go to Grandma Hoyt's Country Buffet and get a single plate or go for the full cafeteria.
Another major draw for Bessemer City is the gorgeous weather. The area hovers in the 80s and 90s during summer and maintains temperatures in the mid-50s for the highs in the winter. There are plenty of ways to capitalize on that fantastic climate within the city. You can play tennis and pickleball or go on a walking trail at Bessemer City Park. Check out the Hive Market downtown to see what farmers and craftsmen have to offer. Or, a few miles south is Veronet Vineyard and Winery, where you can sit outside while you sip a glass of sustainably farmed grapes and enjoy a gorgeous view of Crowders Mountain beyond.
North Carolina's warmer weather means bugs like termites, spiders, ants, cockroaches, and flies come swarming. Unfortunately, pests seem to like that weather too. If you find yourself with a pest problem or are hoping to prevent one, contact a local company that knows the area and its climate. Look no further than At Ease Pest Solutions. We are the area's most-trusted pest control service.
