A Rich History
Cornelius, North Carolina is situated along Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. Cornelius boasts a 54 mile long shoreline along this massive lake which draws visitors from all over the state. Lake Norman got its name from a large energy corporation president named Norman Cocke. Cornelius, a small farm community, was founded in 1893.The town was originally called Liverpool, but its name was changed to Cornelius in honor of Joseph Benjamin Cornelius
who financed the town’s first cotton mill. Cornelius was officially incorporated in 1905. Visitors to Cornelius can check out the preserved historical sites featuring an old rural farm that’s been converted to the oldest standing store in North Carolina. For history buffs, there is the Civil War period re-enactments and living history events.

- Fall - Not surprisingly, fall is a beautiful season in Cornelius due to the colorful fall foliage. The temperatures are a mild mid 50’s to high 60’s. It’s perfect weather for taking in the sites of Cornelius and surrounding areas.
- Winter - Winters in Cornelius are mild, temperatures anywhere from high 30’s to low 50’s. Sporadically, in January of February there can be inclement weather, a bit of snow or ice.
