Dallas, NC

Named after Vice President George M. Dallas, who served under President James K. Polk, Dallas, North Carolina, is a small town of fewer than 5,000 people and is the oldest incorporated town in Gaston County. From 1846 until 1911, it served as the County Seat of Gaston until the seat was moved to Gastonia. In 1868, the old Gaston County courthouse was renovated following a fire, and to this day stands in the town's main square. At one point, the building served as the Dallas Police Department Headquarters.

One of the most popular attractions in Dallas is the Gaston County Museum of Art and History, which sits opposite the Courthouse Square at the site of the former Hoffman Hotel that was built in 1852. Guests of the museum can tour both floors of the well-preserved building, filled with many ever-rotating exhibits of local and regional art and history. The museum is also home to the largest horse-drawn vehicle collection in the state, as well as a permanent Carolina's Textile exhibit. Every so often, the museum puts on events for children that are both fun and educational, so make sure to check out their schedule if you find yourself nearby.

Just a short drive away in nearby Gastonia is another amazing attraction, the Schiele Museum. With permanent and rotating exhibits, this incredible educational institution is wildly popular with guests of all ages. From the dinosaur exhibit to others featuring various wildlife ecosystems, Native American Villages, nature trails, and even an interactive farm exhibit, you won't want to miss it if you're in the area.

Down the road from the museum is a locally popular retail and commercial center near the 321 Interchange, and further down is one of the campuses of Gaston College. Here, nearly a half-million square miles are dedicated to educating roughly 16,000 students and assisting them on their journey to attain degrees in various fields as part of the North Carolina Community College System.

Another regional landmark beloved by residents of the area is Rankin Lake Park, which has been the subject of many efforts to maintain its cleanliness and status as a first-class water source. The park expanded into a local outdoor recreation destination and is now a great spot for family gatherings, fishing from the bank, and other activities. The nearby Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is another favorite for lovers of the outdoors because of its gardens and beautiful flora and fauna. Taking a stroll through this attraction can leave even the most experienced nature lover lost in wonderment.
