It is rare that city status has been so difficult to lock down, but that has been the case with Enochville, North Carolina. Enochville is one of the oldest incorporated towns in Gaston County, chartered in 1877. The latter-day residents assumed that the small town had been unincorporated for over fifty years. Following an order for a town board election, it was discovered that the 1877 charter was still in place. Residents took to the streets to protest the charter, and after a 1974 vote, the charter was repealed. An effort to re-incorporate began in 2003, and a bill was introduced in 2009, but it was unsuccessful. The residents here are pretty clear on what they want.
North Carolina has long been known as NASCAR country, and the Curb Museum for Music and Motorsports doesn’t disappoint. Founder Mike Curb is deeply entrenched in both. His record label, Curb Records, has legendary alums, including Tim McGraw, Hank Williams Jr., and Wynonna Judd. On the racing side, he has owned cars driven by legends like Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Stop by and see Dale’s #2 car, in which he won his 1st championship, and Petty’s #43, in which he cruised to victory 199. There are over 700 wall displays showcasing the best of both worlds.
On a similar musical note is the nearby North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. From 2002-2008 the Hall was inactive because they could not find a home; then, you guessed it, Mike Curb stepped in. He provided a building rent-free for five years to get the institution back on its feet. Today you can listen to the hits and concerts of inductees such as Ronnie Milsap, John Coltrane, and James Taylor. Be part of the action at one of the interactive displays.
