Faith. It’s a word that invokes our most profound spiritual beliefs and implies trust and confidence in something far greater than ourselves. But Faith is also the name of a quaint rural town in eastern Rowan County, and we couldn’t think of another place in North Carolina more worthy of the name.
Faith is very small, encompassing only one square mile, and has a population of only about 1,000 residents. But appropriate to its moniker, when you think of it, something comes to mind that is much greater than its presence in the state. The town is home to the famous Faith Forth, an annual Independence Day celebration that spans several days and dates back to 1946. People travel from all over the country to join in the festivities. It’s rare for such a tiny, unassuming town to garner national recognition, but Faith has done just that. Even President George H. W. Bush attended the event in 1992 when he gave a speech that enthusiastically praised the town’s many virtues.
Warm, friendly, charming, and accommodating are so many ways you could define Faith, and there is so much to do in and around town. How would you spend the day here? Allow us to make a few suggestions:
Start your morning with a delicious plate of Banana Nut Chocolate Chip Pancakes or the Waffles Monte Crisco at Breakfastime Anytime in nearby Salisbury. It’s homestyle cooking at its finest and served in portions so generous that you might want to wear your favorite sweatpants.
Next, chug over to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, where you can take a vintage train ride and learn about the region’s fascinating transport history. But it’s much more than just trains. You’ll see a full-size replica of the Wright Flyer (a twin of the original presently at the Smithsonian), antique automobiles, and fire trucks. It’s informative and fun for the whole family.
Go for a walk at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. Where else could you trek through a gorgeous, sprawling forest while viewing more than 1,700 wild animals in a natural habitat?
Or, for some faithful inspiration, check out Upper Room Chapel, a nondenominational place of worship in a spectacular stone building that looks like a medieval castle.
There’s no better spot to grab lunch than Yostie’s Bakery & Eatery. Their legendary chili dogs are a must, and the locals rave about their cornbread.
Then, for a legendary scare, check out the Old Stone House near Granite Quarry if you dare. It’s a historical landmark where you can learn about life in the 18th century, but you might learn much more than that. As the story goes, ghosts often appear to visitors when a family member is about to meet an untimely death.
You won’t find much else scary in Faith except for a few pests. North Carolina is a state teeming with wildlife and insects, which can sometimes be a problem for homeowners.
