From Stagecoach Stop to Small Town USA
Hickory, North Carolina, 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, lies near the Catawba River. With a population of 40,143, Hickory is known for manufacturing furniture, textiles, fiber-optics, cable, foam and mattresses. It’s also home to the Catawba Valley Community College and Lenoir-Rhyne College. Back in 1846, they established a store at the junction of two stagecoach trails. Four years later, the store became a tavern built under a large hickory tree. The railroad came into the area bringing the establishment of the town of Hickory Tavern. In 1873, the name was changed to Hickory. Hickory became the site of a small wagon manufacturing plant in 1880.
The Miracle of Hickory
Hickory is one of the first small towns to install electric lights in 1888, and a complete sewerage system in 1904. Hickory is famous for the “Miracle of Hickory.” In 1944, the Catawba Valley area was the center of one of the worst outbreaks of polio. Kids couldn’t play outside or have friends over out of fear of contracting the disease. With the help of the citizens of Hickory and the March of Dimes, they built a hospital to care for children of the area. From the time it was decided to open a hospital, find a suitable location, and get it staffed and running, it only took 54 hours. Later, other buildings were added. Many hailed it as an outstanding example of cooperative efforts.
Small Town Life, Big City Culture
Hickory has several museums for visitors to enjoy all year round. During the winter months when it’s colder outside, visitors can check out The Hickory Aviation Museum and the Hickory Museum of Art. Hickory’s summers are perfect for outdoor sports. Visitors can head over to Lake Hickory Adventures boat tours and water sports. There are also great places along the river for fishing, hiking and trail walking. Residents of Hickory say it has the amenities of a large city with the feel of a small town. Hickory is known for its tight community, and it’s a great place for kids to grow up. But like all small towns, residents sometimes experience pest control issues. Pests aren’t welcome in Hickory.
