High Point, North Carolina, is the only city in North Carolina that sits in four counties, Randolph, Forsyth, Guilford, and Davidson. True to its name, parts of the city elevate over 1,000 feet, putting it in company with some of the highest cities in the Piedmont region. As one of the area's largest cities and growing, residents enjoy spectacular views, booming manufacturing, and the cost of living almost 20% less than the national average.
As the "Furniture Capital of the World," the boom began in 1889 with the opening of the High Point Furniture Factory. Before that, local artisans had been producing furniture since the 1600s. In 1905, the city put on its first furniture showcase, known today as the High Point Furniture Market. For five days a year, the top designers, manufacturers, buyers, industry experts, and the public converge in the 11,500,000 square foot showroom. While furniture may not be the most exciting topic, the market is more than that. Take the market or influencer tour, catch a keynote speaker, and see the latest trends worldwide. There are plenty of places to eat, grab a cocktail, or enjoy live entertainment. The High Point Furniture Market is surely the high point of the industry. If you've discovered a newfound love of furniture, there are over 4,000 design and furniture books in the Bernice Bienstock Furniture Library.
It is only right that the World's Largest Chest of Drawers would be here. The monster was built in 1926 in a show of one-upmanship against Thomasville's Giant Chair. By the 1990s, though, the piece was falling apart and barely resembled furniture. In 1996, local craftsman Sid Lenger resurrected the piece with steel framing, synthetic stucco, custom paint, and brass handles. The finishing touch, two giant pairs of socks, were hung out of a partly opened drawer to pay tribute to the city's booming hosiery industry. In 2018, the piece was purchased by the Children's Museum and given another facelift. You can see the world record holder at 508 Hamilton St. in High Point.
If you care to spend a great day outdoors, learn a bit, and help the environment, then don't pass up All-A-Flutter Farms. The facility breeds Monarch butterflies, whose release has taken the place of balloons, rice, and flower petals at events. Take a tour, witness the life cycle stages, see what butterflies eat, and learn about the majestic flyer. Bring home a Caterpillar Castle and watch as the eggs grow and become ready to release Monarchs. If you're having a party, release packages are available.
Have you ever wondered what life was like in the 1800s? At the Museum of Old Domestic Life, you can do just that. Hundreds of items from everyday Quaker life are on display, such as a loom, butter churn, kraut choppers, candle molds, and more. Most items are hands-on to get a real feel for the times.
There are some things from way back when in High Point that exist today, pests. Our ancestors had a harder time dealing with
roaches,
ants, and
termites than we do. One of the reasons is we have At Ease Pest Solutions. At Ease is the leading pest control service in the Piedmont region, and we are ready to help you today.
