High Shoals is Gaston County’s newest municipality. The area has been populated since the 1780s, though it’s only been incorporated for about 50 years. The village earned its name as an ode to the shoals in the South Fork River nearby. The rapids from the river helped fuel industry and iron ore mining as the area developed more. Ironworks pushed the area forward until the Civil War disrupted business, and textile manufacturing took over. At one time, the textile community owned the entire city. Now, the mill town serves as a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte nearby.
Remnants of High Shoals’ history can still be found throughout the area. A picturesque scene reminiscent of the old times still sits along the 321 as you head North. An old truss bridge remains beside the road, rusted but a fantastic reminder of how far the area has come. There are also spots to launch paddle boats and explore what remains of the old ironworks facility. Another good place to get in the water is Robinson Catfish Lake. As you may guess from the name, the lake is known for the giant catfish. Fishermen go out there to find their prize catch.
It’s a bit of a trek, but High Shoals Falls, within the South Mountains State Park, is well worth the drive. The trail is one of the most scenic in the state. The hike to the waterfall is just two miles round-trip, or you can try out a 2.7-mile loop. The first portion of the walk takes you on an easy journey by the Jacob Fork River until you eventually go through cliffs, rhododendron forests, and an impressive boardwalk.
After a day in the mountains comes time to refuel the body, and there’s plenty to choose from. One good choice is Bolton’s Curbside Cookery, a mobile food trailer serving up award-winning chili and other soups and smash burgers with a long list of toppings. Get the best of both worlds with the Sweet Caroline, Bad Nana’s Chili on top of the burger, or do breakfast for dinner with a fried egg and bacon on top of your Brekkie Burger.
Another popular spot is Jia Asian Fusion and Sushi Bar. The sushi chef was trained in China and incorporates Chinese culture into his food, crafting dishes like chili red snapper, ginger miso salmon, and mala with basil. The appetizers are also intriguing, including spicy tuna tartar tacos, kung pao chicken quesadillas, braised pork belly, and spicy basil mussels.
