Hildebran

Hildebran, North Carolina

Hildebran, NC

The residents of Hildebran, North Carolina, are not quite sure how the name of their town came to be. The more popular account has the name coming from Soloman and Jacob Hildebrand, landowners in the 1800s. The second story has the town named after 11th-century Pope Gregory VII, born Hildebrand of Sovana.

The town was incorporated in 1899 and was officially named Hildebran due to a spelling error in the paperwork. There has been a population explosion here since 2020, increasing almost 57%. With the cost of living 17% less than the national average and home appreciation up 12.2% in the last year, it's no wonder.

For a deeper look into the area's history, the Hildebran Heritage Museum was created. Here you can find photographs, historical documents, paintings, and more period-specific items and a collection of Native American artifacts. In the Berry Room, the 1900s living is displayed with furniture and antiques from the area.

Perhaps the area's most well-known location is the Abandoned Henry River Mill Village. The Mill opened in 1905, and by 1987, the village it was in was completely abandoned. Abandoned towns are generally referred to as ghost towns, and this one is the real deal. People have reported rocks and sticks thrown at them, and ghosts of three mill workers have been seen chatting. The area has appeared on the Magnolia Channel's In with the Old and The Science Channel's Mysteries of the Abandoned. In 2012, the village was so perfectly run down that it served as the long-suffering District 12 in the movie, The Hunger Games. Today, you can take a guided tour and maybe catch a ghostly glimpse.

Though not as scary, you can have a great time at the Henry Fork River Park. Soccer is the name of the game here, with nine fields filled with youth soccer players. Test your skills on the Alpine Rope course or in the horseshoe pit. For a more relaxed time, take a stroll on the paved walking trail or watch the kids on the playground. With an 8,000-square-foot picnic shelter complete with a catering kitchen, picnic tables, and a restroom, you can host the party of a lifetime.

If a day at the park has worked up an appetite, try Trip Advisor's #1-rated restaurant, Frye Daddy's Diner.  The menu is full of classic Southern dishes and daily lunch specials. See if you can finish the large Frye Daddy's Breakfast Special but come early; breakfast ends at 10:50 am.

A trip to Los Compadres Mexican Restaurant can liven up your taste buds. Traditional Mexican dishes like arroz con pollo, fajitas, and El Molcajete are cooked to spicy perfection. You can put the fire out with one of thirteen margaritas. Save some room for dessert because the flan and sopapillas can have you thinking you're south of the border.
