Horneytown, NC

Horneytown, North Carolina, started as a textile mill town, mostly a quick stop for those traveling along the railroad. The town isn't completely unheard of; it even graces the cover of a book called "Welcome to Horneytown, North Carolina, Population 15; An A to Z Tour Through 201 of the World's Weirdest and Wildest Places." Though bearing a funny title, the book exaggerated a bit about the population size. There are about 200 people who live in the town, but plenty of people visit to check out the fun shopping opportunities and historic buildings.

Today if you're driving in from the I-74 headed north into Horneytown, you'll pass a fan-favorite roadside attraction: the world's largest chest of drawers. If you're into museums, there are a couple nearby. One is a Victorian-style house made in 1878 and then reworked into a museum called Korner's Folly. Within the 22 rooms of the house, no two doorways or windows are identical; the ceiling heights range from something only a child could fit in comfortably to massive expanses of rooms 25 feet high; there are cubby holes and trap doors worked into the design; and the air distribution system is unique. The original furnishings, artwork, woodwork, and hand-laid tile remain intact for visitors to explore.

The High Point Museum celebrates the area's history. One exhibit explores how furniture manufacturing influenced the area's growth. Another highlight is miniature replicas of real rooms, places, and imagined ones. If you decide to get some fresh air afterward, the Historical Park is next door, showing off three historic buildings, including two homes (one built in 1786 and the other in 1801) and a working blacksmith shop created in 1841.

If you'd rather have a grander outdoor adventure, head to the Piedmont Environmental Center. The conservancy includes 6.6 miles of nature trails, including some that take you along lakes and others that focus on hardwood and pine forests. A central building hosts educational classes. Or, if you want a park day with your dog, go to Hedgecock Park, which has an off-leash area for small dogs, and one for large dogs, plus shade and benches for the owners.

You'll find plenty of down-home cooking and family restaurants nearby. The Rainbow Family Restaurant was voted the Best of the Southern Triad in 2022 for its southern cooking and daily specials. For breakfast, you may want to try out the all-you-can-eat buffet at Spiros Family Restaurant. The joint has plenty to feast on with seafood boils, a hefty meat selection and a salad bar. The Pioneer Family Restaurant has been honored in North Carolina's Talk Awards for four years after winning over customers' hearts with meals named for famous folks in the area, like the Sheriff Reid Super Sirloin and Roger Blackwell Large Ribeye.
