Superheroes have been a big part of our culture since the first appearance of The Phantom in 1936. From Superman to Batman and the Avengers, a trail of super villains follows them, and their powers are equally impressive. In real life, we witness the powers of certain bugs and find there are many that super villains also use. Here is a look at some of the fictional bad guys and the bugs who could portray them.
The Zombie Master: This giant genius used a machine of his own creation to turn others into zombies. We have two entrants for this part. Parasitic Wasps attack certain species of spiders. After paralyzing it with venom, the wasp lays an egg on the spider’s abdomen. After hatching, the near-adult wasp introduces chemicals that change the spider’s nervous system. Then, the zombie spider unknowingly builds its web to keep the wasp safe. When the web is done, the spider lays in the center to be devoured by the wasp. The Jewel Wasp zombifies cockroaches and leads them to the wasp nest. After laying eggs on the roach, the larva creates a cocoon inside the roach and feeds off of it.
Scorpion: This rival of Spiderman was the result of an experiment giving humans abilities that animals have. This resulted in pincers that easily tear through Spiderman’s web and the ability to shoot fire and acid from his tail. The choice here is easy, the Red Imported Fire Ant. When threatened, it uses pincers to grab the victim and shoots a toxic blend into the wound. The feeling it causes has been described as fire. Interestingly, the Tawny Crazy Ant covers itself in formic acid to neutralize the fire ant’s attack.
Morbius: Suffering from a blood disease, this scientist injected himself with genetically altered bat DNA. The result was a never-ending need for human blood. Morbius specifically was driven for Spiderman’s blood. This brazen villain can only be represented by the king of the bloodsuckers, the bed bug. This insidious pest lurks in the shadows and pounces while we are asleep. They track us by the carbon dioxide we breathe and inject us with a painkiller, so we don’t even feel their bite. One would be bad enough, but they multiply rapidly and are experts at hiding. Not far behind the bed bug is the tick. With a hook lined-mouth, they dig into our skin. Then, after being anchored in, their saliva causes our blood to pool, where they can easily suck it up.
Mephisto: This isn’t your run-of-the-mill bad guy; he may be the devil himself. Along with many other powers, he is fast, really fast. He sets the bar atop Marvel’s Universe Series III as the only villain with the highest speed ranking. There is only one choice here, and that’s the cockroach. The havoc they cause is legendary, which is true to the villain persona. Their speed, though, has them the envy of the insect world. At up to five feet per second, that translates to 3.4 mph. While that may not seem fast, factor in their body size, and it is amazing. In human terms, a roach the size of an average person would run about 200 miles per hour.
Thanos: This guy seems to have it all and almost wiped out half of the earth. His strength, and army, are legendary, able to withstand the full power of The Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. Pound for pound, the strongest insect we have here is the leafcutter ant. They can lift over 5,000 times their body weight and carry items more than 1,000 times with ease. They work together en masse and cumulatively, can carry way more than that. They have been seen transporting small birds and lizards. These guys number in the millions, and there is no need for any infinite stones.
Carnage: If you took Spiderman and gave him steroids, you would have Carnage. Along with his shape-shifting and incredible strength, he can jump over 30 feet high. When it comes to jumping bugs, there is no match for the froghopper. This insect holds the record at 28 inches. That may not seem like much, but, at only ¼ inch, it’s equivalent to a 6ft man jumping 600 feet in a single leap. To accomplish this leap, it accelerates at over 13,000 feet per second.
