Jerusalem, North Carolina, has a little over 6,000 residents who enjoy a suburban neighborhood amid otherwise rural surroundings.
The landscape in Jerusalem is genuinely gorgeous, with plenty of opportunities to see nature’s beauty nearby. One is Boone’s Cave Park, named for Squire Boone, who showed up around 1750. Today, the park includes 7.5 miles of trails which are purposely preserved to reflect how they looked when Boone first appeared here. Those trails go through rolling forests, showing off hardwood trees and wildflowers only found in the Appalachian Mountains. There are also over 125 different butterflies that grace the area.
RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls, known locally as The Bullhole, is another beautiful stop right by Jerusalem. A flood left behind a sandy beach, marked off by a stone dam that creates small rapids that people swim and tube by. Some choose to fish, while others hike along the wooded trails or host picnics at the benches throughout the preserve.
Hunters may want to stop by Perkins Game Land, a few miles northeast of Jerusalem. The wetlands and uplands play host to deer and fowl. Alcoa Game Land is even closer and has water bodies that make it easy to find deer.
If you’re more of a golfer, you’ll want to stop by the public course at Colin Creek Farm. The 12-hole course at Colin Creek, formerly the Hickory Hill Golf Club, invites golfers of all ability levels, with different mixes of difficulty tiers, to keep everyone entertained. For those interested in playing 18 holes, the course has a unique design. The first six holes have multiple tee boxes set up at different angles so players can repeat the holes and have unique experiences.
If you’re looking for a bite to eat, try out Hot Diggity Dogs and Ice Cream. On top of what the name would suggest, the local joint has homemade soups for just a few bucks, plus a rotating menu of sub sandwiches, tacos, and more. If you head North along the 601, you’ll run into many local restaurants that could please anyone’s palate.
Get some down-home Southern cooking at Kent’s Kitchen or Maw Maw’s Kitchen. Stop by the food truck Taqueria La Favorita or swing by Monte del Ray for Mexican. Grab a pulled pork sandwich or chicken and dumplings from CJ’s Barbecue. Or sit down for American favorites like cheeseburgers, sandwiches, or salads at Restaurant 101.
