Lake Norman

Fishing on Lake Norman is very popular, with Striped-Spotted Bass, Largemouth Bass, and Catfish being the most popular game fish in the lake. The lake is home to annual fishing tournaments.  

Lake Norman is home to Lake Norman State Park, a 1,328 acre park dedicated in 1962 upon the completion of the dam and lake. The park includes mountain biking trails, a beach, and a major dock facility for recreational boating and fishing. The park also features camping with kitchen, fireplace, and restroom facilities. The park contains a large variety of wildlife and plant life. Ramsey Creek Park is also located at Lake Norman and includes a large waterfront park, beach, and dog park. This park has a boat ramp, fishing pier, and walking/nature trails. Davidson College has a campus at Lake Norman that primarily provides lakeside and water recreation for the school’s students and staff.

The Lake Norman area is a popular suburban community serving Mooresville and the entire Charlotte Metropolitan Area. There are numerous popular dining and recreational opportunities in the towns and communities surrounding the lake. Nearby activities for kids include Zootastic Park in nearby Troutman, which features exotic animals and Discovery Place in Huntersville which includes a museum designed to be fun for kids while sparking their imagination. Carrigan Farms is near the lake and offers farm tours, events hosting, and a haunted trail during the Halloween season. The Lake Norman real estate market is thriving. New construction of recreational properties and suburban homes serving Charlotte and nearby communities has enjoyed substantial growth in recent years.

In recent years, there have been numerous reports of a monster in Lake Norman along the lines of the Loch Ness Monster, and the public’s affectionate name for the mythical monster is “Normie.” Normie fits in well with the Scottish-Irish heritage of the Lake Norman area, although there are still no sightings of Normie documented with actual evidence (other than what are probably sightings of some big catfish).
