Lincolnton

Revolutionary War Battleground
Lincolnton has been a center of commerce and community since the time of the Revolutionary War. It was established as the center of Lincoln County in 1785. The city and the county were not named for Honest Abe but got their name decades earlier from General Benjamin Lincoln who served the young United States in the war for American independence. Lincolnton played a vital role in the American Revolution, and every June that is highlighted with the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill “Battle Weekend” event. The first successful textile mill south of New England was built by Michael Schenck in 1813. It was destroyed by a flood 3 years after opening, and 3 years after that, Schenk and partners built a larger mill. That mill was in operation until the Civil War.

Lincolnton takes great pride in its history, and residents and tourists alike enjoy visiting the many preserved historical sites, downtown attractions, and the historic downtown area. The Lincoln Cultural Center hosts a historical center dedicated to the story of Lincoln County and Lincolnton; it is also home to a performing arts center for theatrical and musical productions.
