Lowesville

Lowesville, North Carolina

Lowesville, NC

At the Southeastern tip of Lincoln County, you'll find the 6.8-square-mile, 3,000-person town of Lowesville. It's easy to access because of major freeways and highways bordering the town. One thing that makes the census-designated place so notable is how limitless the opportunities are to be out in nature. The area has dedicated much of its land to preserves, parks, and the celebration of natural beauty.

A good spot to visit is Blythe Landing Park. It includes a trail that's just a small portion of the Carolina Thread Trail, but the park itself is massive. Over 26 acres, you'll find boat slips, playgrounds, volleyball courts, and concessions. The park and the small trail are lined with gigantic pine and maple trees, a complete opposite from the beach area also included in the park.

Latta Nature Preserve is also nearby. The Quest nature center hosts educational seminars and offers information on the flora and fauna you'll find over the nearly 1,500-acre preserve. If you've got kids, they'll be thrilled to visit the 6,000-gallon aquarium and see native animals or check out the paddling program.

There is also the 668-acre protected site by the Catawba River, Cowan's Ford Wildlife Refuge. It's an extremely popular area for birdwatchers who look for creatures partial to oak-hickory forests and mixed pine-hardwood forests.

If you're interested in places with greater historical significance, stop by the memorial plaque honoring the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence at the Alexandriana Historical Site. Or try out Historic Rural Hill, a cultural events site, farm, nature preserve, and historic site packed into one just a few miles away from Lowesville in Huntersville. It includes a vast network of walking trails across 265 acres and offers educational opportunities through a facility that takes you back in time. Pick up a blacksmith's hammer, chop a woodworker's adze (similar to an axe), feel the weight of a militiaman's musket, and learn about recipes cooked at Rural Hill over an open hearth.

One more impressive place to visit near Lowesville is the Millican Pictorial History Museum. Located within an old house, this museum offers thousands of photos reflecting the area's past, including textile mills and churches. The owner has been praised for his ability to walk people through every photograph's backstory.

If you're looking for a bite to eat, try the Lowesville Café. The restaurant menu includes an entire "Everyday Best Deals" section with grilled platters, battered and fried fish and meat, Greek specialties, and more.

The Chillfire Bar & Grill is another option, promising regional flavors and local taste sourced from nearby North Carolinian farms. Try out unique dishes at dinner like "Angry Lobster," a flash-fried lobster tail served spicy alongside a jalapeno honey mustard dip. Or treat yourself to one of their steaks, which are guaranteed to be hand-selected and aged a minimum of 35 days, then broiled in an infrared broiler set to 1800 degrees. If you prefer fish, explore unique flavors in the horseradish and asiago-crusted Scottish salmon.
