Mineral Springs, NC

Mineral Springs, North Carolina's history dates back to the 18th century. However, it nearly lost its charter in 1999 but ultimately was re-incorporated. That was great news for a town that saw its population grow nearly 20% between 2010 and 2020. Re-incorporating meant that the town could keep its rural identity when suburban development was happening around them. Rural life is at the heart of Mineral Springs, as many residents have horses and farms. The population growth spurred the city to put together a detailed plan for low, medium, and high growth. From the plan, it was stated, "Proper growth and planning along with focused leadership will make the next few years of growth possible and efficient."  One of the reasons for the plan may be due to the property tax rate. The state with the lowest average tax rate is Hawaii, with a rate of .28%; Mineral Springs checks in at .25%.

Going to the Museum of the Alphabet, you can find 12 rooms that take you worldwide to discover the history of various alphabets. You can learn about cuneiform, tonal languages, Native American dialects, and alternative communication methods, including music, Braille, and math. If you've ever wondered what happens at a museum when the doors are locked, spend the evening at one of the Night at the Museum events. If you can't get to the museum, you can enjoy a cell phone tour.

For some history, you can take home, visit Welte's Antiques & More on Main. Here you can find antique furniture, jewelry, art, and home décor. If you have an antique to sell, the shop also takes pieces on consignment. To restore an antique piece of furniture, Treasures Refinished has been serving the area since 1993. Mary Ann and Terry Gaddy are experts in the field and help you decide whether pieces should be restored or refinished.

The region's most popular and biggest attraction of its kind is the Queen's Cup Steeplechase. Held at Brooklandwood, a 260-plus acre estate and farm, it is one of the major events on the steeplechase horse racing schedule. Over 15,000 spectators attend the spectacle that has been held since 1996. The steeplechase is thoroughbred racing at its finest with five races on the day, but that is only part of the festivities. Start your day at the amazing tailgate area and enter the most whimsical, elegant, or creative contests. Other events include the Jack Russell Terrier Race, the Raptor Release, and the Walking of the Hounds. Hand-decorated hats are displayed as entrants vie for the crown in the Hat Contest. The best part of the event is how it affects the community. Over 25 years, the day at the races has raised over one million dollars for local charities.
