Mint Hill, North Carolina, is a city steeped in history. The area began as a community called Clear Creek in 1750 and was Mecklenburg County’s first town. The founders signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775 and went to battle in the Revolutionary War. Today’s 26,000 plus residents enjoy a great place to live as a suburb of Charlotte. The thriving city offers wooded neighborhoods, farms, and so much to do that leaving is an afterthought.
One of the most important spots in the town is the North Carolina Korean War Memorial. The beautiful central fountain is surrounded by four giant granite pillars inscribed with the names of 788 North Carolina veterans who were missing in action or killed during the Korean War. Two life-sized soldier statues have the names and faces of the veterans awarded the Medal of Honor.
One of the yearly highlights is the Mint Hill Madness Family Fun Festival. The three-day event features local rock and country bands, carnival rides, goodies, and the Miss Mint Hill Scholarship Pageant, culminating with an incredible fireworks display. Christmas in Mint Hill begins with a parade leading to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Kids can drop off their letters to Santa at the Town Hall. Hop Around Mint Hill has a city-wide Easter Egg Hunt with clues left on the town’s social media. Each egg has a unique QR code to scan for entrance into the contest and vie for the prizes. Other events include Family Fun Nights, Music and Brew, and the Scarecrow Contest.
For a different kind of fun, spend a day at the Stevens Creek Nature Center & Preserve. Birdwatch, picnic, or hike through over three miles of forested trails. At the nature center, you can view native animals and exhibits, sign up for a program, or grab a souvenir at the gift shop. Programs include Scaly and Slimy, Sensory Safari, FBI (Fungus, Bacteria, and Invertebrates) Investigation, and more.
Kids can have a jumping good time at Urban Air Adventure Park, but they are not the only ones. There are events for everyone, like Parent’s Night Out, School Day Play, Teen Night, and Jumparoo. Choose from almost twenty attractions like the Slam Dunk Zone, ProZone Performance Trampolines, and the Tubes Playground. Try the new Virtual Reality experience and fight against dragons and robots. There is so much to do that one day is not nearly enough.
At Mint Hill Veteran’s Memorial Park, it may be hard to choose what to do. There are volleyball, tennis, handball courts, soccer and softball fields, horseshoe pits, a skating and bike path, and a children’s playground. You may see raccoons, deer, birds, and reptiles along the nature trail. The park is a great place for a family reunion and can accommodate a gathering of up to 250 people.
