Mount Holly

Mount Holly, North Carolina

Mount Holly, NC

King George II of Great Britain first issued land grants in the Mount Holly, North Carolina area, around 1750. Originally named Woodlawn, the name was changed in 1888 to pay homage to the Mount Holly Cotton Mill (NC) and the famous yarn produced in Mount Holly, New Jersey. The cotton mill was the 4th built-in Gaston County and remains today and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Also in the register is the Downtown Mount Holly Historic District. The twenty-five buildings in the district were built between 1883 and 1960 and included Charlie's Drugs and Sundries(1960), First Presbyterian Church (1927), and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (1903).

Much has changed over the years, but the sense of community here has not wavered. Many citywide events bring the residents together. The Springfest is a weeklong celebration including a 5k run, golf tournament, kids fest, awards dinner, food trucks, and more. Don't miss the July 4th Fireworks Celebration held downtown. Enjoy live music, crafts, great food, and more. There is also a free Kid Zone.

The Christmas Parade and Festival may be the year's best. Attend the Miracle on Main Street and join in the caroling at the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Visit Santa in the Grand Hall or go for a horse-drawn carriage ride. Many more fun activities are on schedule. On select Fridays throughout the year, you can enjoy the Mount Holly Nights Concert Series.

There are also many things to do here year-round. Get your creative juices flowing at Create In Us Art Studio. There are classes for kids and adults in many different areas of the art world, including paint, lettering, wood cutouts, and more. You can also visit their booth at most of the city events.

If you prefer to view rather than create, stroll around the Awaken Gallery. The mission of the artists is to create a feeling of unity among all who visit, regardless of culture. Ancient symbols are used in modern settings for a connection of the ages.

For amazing, sweet treats, you won't want to pass by the award-winning Queen Bee Bakery. Try one of the fifteen flavors of cupcakes. Freshly baked truffles, muffins, and brownies are on the menu. Stand back as a hot chocolate bomb explodes with flavor right from your cup.

The treats are just one of the things out of this world here, especially on October 25th. A house on the Catawba River gets paid a visit once a year. On October 25th, 1886, a man found his wife passed out in the foyer, the space covered in blue light. Appearing at the top of the stairs was a Union soldier. It had only sunken holes for eyes and a left arm stump dripping dark blue blood. All was quiet until exactly a year later when the ghost returned. Throughout history, and regardless of the owner, similar sightings have been made. Mark the date on your calendar and stay away.
