Mount Pleasant, NC

In the eastern portion of Cabarrus County, you'll find about 1,650 people living in a town named for its gorgeous scenery: Mount Pleasant. The area started as a campsite called Mount Comfort in the mid-1700s, serving as a comfortable stopping point between Salisbury and Charles Town with beautiful views of the Adams and Buffalo Creeks. As more German settlers were drawn to the area through the middle of the 19th century, enough of a population gathered to create a town. There are still homes built in that era that exist today, including the 1840s homes of a physician and a pastor.

Farmers grew cotton as a cash crop; eventually, mills, lumber companies, and industrial textile centers took over. Mount Pleasant maintained a rural feel despite the area's growth and prosperity. It keeps that small-town charm today, which is evident at the White Owl Antique Mall, one of the largest in the South, with over 500 vendors set up indoors across about 2.3 acres. Stores there sell everything from vintage items to collectibles, advertisements, and signs to glassware and fine China.

If you're more of a nature lover, your preferred visit might be to the Buffalo Creek Preserve. A 2.1-mile one-way trail takes hikers through restored oak-savannah, local farmland growing hay and grains, then along Adams Creek. The preserve enhances water quality by protecting many different streams, ponds, and wetlands. It also includes agricultural fields and natural forests.

For a unique experience in Mount Pleasant, stop by Southern Grace Distilleries to tour the former prison. The Whiskey Prison tour takes you on a 45-minute educational adventure of the campus, including dorms and solitary confinement cells, along with teaching about fermentation and distillation. They end with tastings of the products made on-site. If you're more interested in the bourbon than the prison, a Private Barrel House tasting focuses more on the creation of the alcohol, and the Private Bourbon Experience is a combination of the two with an even more in-depth discussion of craft distillation.

If you'd rather get a drink and a meal, you've got plenty of options for great restaurants in the area. 73 & Main is a triple threat, acting as a restaurant, pub, and bourbon bar within a historic location. The food is high-end, with appetizers like charcuterie boards and crab cakes, and mains like surf & turf pasta, aged ribeye, or pecan-encrusted Norwegian salmon. The bar section boasts one of the largest bourbon selections in North Carolina, with 35 different rare and antique options. And attached to the restaurant is Mt. Pleasant's first brewery, Old Well, offering a wide selection, including blonde ales, IPAs, ambers, browns, wheat, and stouts.

The family restaurant Buddy's Place is a major go-to if you're more in the mood for comfort food. For breakfast, you can order a variety of meats like city ham, country ham, smoked sausage, or "livermush," served with sides of biscuits and gravy or hashbrowns. Come dinnertime; the menu has just about anything you could crave, fried chicken, liver, spaghetti, souvlaki or gyro plates, steak, oysters, wings, you name it. You can get classic toppings, strawberry crisps, or a chocolate chip version if you want pizza for dessert.
