Newton, North Carolina's history goes back to the late 1840s. Over the years, Newton faced challenges such as the Civil War and Reconstruction but still managed to establish stores, houses, and Catawba College. The town expanded its infrastructure during the early 1900s, and residents contributed significantly to both World Wars. With around 13,000 people, the city has a diverse community that takes pride in being the County Seat of Catawba County, and its people make it shine.

 

The North Main Avenue Historic District comprises 86 buildings, most constructed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The architecture of the buildings in the district is primarily Colonial Revival and Bungalow / American Craftsman style, with notable examples including the Junius R. Gaither House, Henkel-Williams-White House, and Hewitt-McCorkle House. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

In 2010, the theatre acquired and renovated the old Newton Post Office as its permanent home, now known as the Old Post Office Playhouse, which boasts state-of-the-art facilities.
