A History Of Rail & Agriculture
Troutman is a town of about 2,500 residents in Iredell County, North Carolina. Troutman is about 35 miles north of Charlotte and is part of the Charlotte–Concord–Gastonia Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Troutman was founded in the 1750s by families settling the frontier lands of North Carolina. They settled and developed the area for agricultural commerce. The town was named for the early settler and landowner Jacob Troutman.
The community was an important crossroads of commerce in the 1800s and was on a major supply line north to Richmond, Virginia for agricultural products and local hardwood. The completion of the AT&O Railway in 1858 made Troutman a railroad town with regular passenger and freight service through the town. The Civil War interrupted railway service through the town until 1870, and the original depot still stands today on its relocated site near the Troutman family cemetery.
Troutman was charted by the North Carolina legislature in 1905, and today the city offers top-quality municipal services. The town’s police force is made up of 14 full-time officers and six part-time officers. The town’s public works department provides water and sewer service to the residents and maintains the town’s streets and public roadways. The town is served by the Iredell-Statesville School System.
The town maintains
Troutman ESC Park,
a 30.1 acre park providing ball fields, nature trails, pavilion and picnic facilities, and a playground. This a family friendly place to enjoy the day.
Always Something To Do
