If Unionville, North Carolina, is on your list of places to visit, make sure you take the trip on the first Friday of November. November 4th, 2022, marked the 73rd anniversary of the event. Tickets were only one dollar the first year, and 325 lbs. of pork were cooked in a field over an open flame. Today, over 15,000 lbs. are cooked over specially prepared pits. The event takes hundreds of volunteers to run smoothly, and residents gladly help with cooking, bagging orders, serving, and more than 25 other tasks. The event is held at the Unionville Elementary School, and students play a big part in the festivities. For a taste of down-home Southern cooking and hospitality, you don't want to miss out on the hickory smoked BBQ, tangy slaw, and Brunswick stew.
The town is one of the most community active in North Carolina, with events planned throughout the year like the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting, Miss Unionville Scholarship Pageant, July 4th Celebration, and the Summer Concert Series. There is no greater example of community service than that provided by the Lions Club. The club has been operating since 1972 and sponsors many of the town's events. The Lions are also behind many health-related services, including sight, hearing, and general health screenings. In North Carolina, they were also the first club to pledge $400 per member to the SightFirst II Campaign.
For an experience that may not exist anywhere else, there is the unique Tree House Vineyard. You can enjoy great wines with a view overlooking the property in a real tree house.
