Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has received many accolades in recent years. U.S. World News & Report ranked the city as the 56th best place to live in the. World News and Forbes listed the city in the best places to retire in 2022, and LendingTree's Magnify Money blog named Winston-Salem as the #2 city in the nation for Women in Technology. A more diverse, culturally rich area that combines the best of the past with cutting-edge technology may not exist. Throw in an amazing art scene, and it is no wonder the name City of Arts and Innovation has been earned.
Located downtown is the Stevens Center, the primary home for the Piedmont Opera, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the National Black Theatre Festival, and many University of North Carolina School of the Arts performances. The historic venue was originally built in 1929 and was a silent movie theater. In 1983, the backstage and stage were redesigned to accommodate Broadway-sized productions. Make sure to catch a show before the building is shut down for the next major renovation sometime in 2024.
Your tastebuds can savor the flavors on the Moravian Culinary Trail. Unlike a tour, take one of the three trails and stop and go (or stay as long) for as long as you like. Each trail has many spots to stop in for its specialty. On the first leg, you'll find out why Winston-Salem is the center of Moravian Cookie production worldwide. Over a million pounds of sweet, super-thin cookies are baked here annually. Winkler Bakery has been at it for over 200 years.
The next trail is for the Moravian Chicken Pie. Originally crafted from leftovers and gravy baked in a flaky crust, more than 260 years have gone into creating today's perfect version. If you still have room, trail three brings you the Moravian Sugar Cake. These cakes have deeply pressed pockets to fit more sugar, butter, and cinnamon. Legend has it that Moravian men looked for women with bigger thumbs, and the giveaway was deeper pockets in the sugar cake.
The Black Mountain Chocolate Bar is not your run-of-the-mill candy store. There is no bulk chocolate here; the only chocolate that is melted first arrives in bean form. Artisans work with small batches to bring you finely crafted treats, but the bar is much more. Unique cocktails were created to pair with baked treats like tarts, scones, biscotti, and more.
Meet some of the finest artisans in the country at the annual Piedmont Craftsmen's Fair. For over sixty years, experts and artists have shown off their unique abilities in glasswork, wood, leather, photography, jewelry, and much more. Find that one-of-a-kind piece to complete almost any décor. The Piedmont Craftsmen is a non-profit organization that helps the community with public school presentations, trade shows, and more.
