Eufola, North Carolina, falls within Iredell County, a land whose name translates to "a valley of flowing air." Ridges and the Brushy Mountains surround the valley, and it is cut through by the South Yadkin River and countless creeks that stem from it. The topography makes the little-known place incredibly beautiful.
Eufola has the benefit of being a small community but having everything anyone could want, from shops to beautiful natural landscapes. Reeder Creek runs directly through, crossing Eufola Road and then branching into two separate streams. Along the creek, you'll find gorgeous woods to walk through, banks to fish from, and shallows where you can search for ancient artifacts. Several Native American tribes originally settled Iredell County, namely those of the Eastern Siouan culture. Pottery, tools, and weapons have been found nearby.
If you follow Carrier Road about a mile and a half out of town, it'll take you directly to Lake Norman, the largest freshwater man-made lake in the country and is known for its bass fishing. There are even chartered cruises you can take on the lake, plus opportunities to rent jet skis, boats, and paddleboards. If you're into hiking or biking, there are many paths, including the Kincaid Trail, which links up with a regional network of trails across 15 counties in two states.
If you like the area but aren't looking to spend the day outdoors, visiting the shops and restaurants near the lake is a great way to pass some time. Birkdale Village is an enchanting retail center built over what once was a massive dairy farm. Today, the open-air shopping plaza is lined with gardens and trees and has a mix of charming local boutiques and larger brand-name emporiums, coupled with restaurants and coffee shops.
Some of those restaurants have a lakeside view. If you've got a boat or a strong paddler, you can cruise down Lake Norman and dock directly at the Waterside Bar and Grill. The place boasts the "best wings on the lake" and has a fried form of anything you can think of, from cheese curds to mushrooms, pickles to potatoes. As a lakeside joint, there are plenty of fish options, including cod, mahi-mahi, and more. If you aren't the one driving the boat, you may want to pair that with one of their signature cocktails or rotating taps.
Another way to view the beautiful sights is to take a fifteen-minute drive from Eufola to Devasté Vineyards, the first winery in the county. Their list of whites has largely sweet, aromatic varietals, while their reds are more full-bodied and tannic. Each bottle of wine features a label with a local artist's original work. If wine isn't your thing, you may prefer Devasté's craft beer, brewed on-site and made in small batches with water from a 600-foot deep well. The vineyard also keeps a gourmet food trailer on-site through a partnership with Flock Bistro of Mooresville, whose chefs create the perfect pairings to the wine.
Living amongst the natural beauty of forests, water bodies, and mountain views is a blessing.
